What does book value of stock mean

Book value is the net asset value (NAV) of a company's stocks and bonds. Finding the NAV involves subtracting the company's short- and long-term liabilities from its assets to find net assets. Then you'd divide the net assets by the number of of common stock, preferred stock, or bonds to get the NAV per or per bond. Book value per share is a fairly conservative way to measure a stock's value. The book value of a company, stripped to basics, is the value of the company the stockholders will own if the firm's assets are sold and all of the firm's debts are paid up. The book value per share is a market value ratio that weighs stockholders' equity against shares outstanding. In other words, the value of all shares divided by the number of shares issued. Book value of an asset refers to the value of an asset when depreciation is accounted for.

Book value is equal to a company's current market value divided by the "book value" of all of its shares. To determine a company's book value, you'll need to look at its balance sheet. Also known as shareholder's equity or stockholder's equity, this amount is equal to the company's assets minus its liabilities. In accounting, book value is the value of an asset according to its balance sheet account balance. For assets, the value is based on the original cost of the asset less any depreciation, amortization or impairment costs made against the asset. Put simply, book value represents that part of the accounting value of a business that will be left after debts are paid off. You can arrive at the figure by deducting liabilities from assets (he will be left with shareholders' equity). Dividing this by the number of shares will give the book value per share. Stock market investors often find themselves trying to resolve the difference between a stock's value and its price. If you have spent any time investing in the stock market , you know that value and price are two different measures arrived at by different means.
